Gerwin: Data Scientist

In this article, we introduce you to Gerwin, a Data Scientist at Squadra Machine Learning Company. You’ll learn more about his role, what he enjoys most about working at Squadra, and how he spends his free time.

Gerwin was 23 when he started working at Squadra. Now, three years later, he’s still right at home with the team in Oss. He first got to know Squadra during an internship as part of his Master’s in Data Science in Nijmegen. After the internship, they stayed in touch, and once he graduated, it didn’t take long for him to decide that Squadra was the place he wanted to continue his career!

What does a Data Scientist do?  

At Squadra, Gerwin mainly works on developing AI applications and writing algorithms for various clients. He also contributes to full AI systems and classification projects.

But what does that actually mean? “I make sure things can happen automatically, so companies spend less time on simple, repetitive tasks,” says Gerwin. “I teach a computer to identify, approach, and solve a problem on its own.”

More and more, he also uses generative AI techniques, such as LLMs and AI Agents, to automatically generate text or support complex decision-making.

A mix of fresh ideas and experience  

Within the relatively young team, a lot gets done quickly—thanks to close collaboration and open communication. “People are always willing to sit down and discuss something,” Gerwin says. “That allows us to improve things very quickly, and I think that’s one of the reasons our team is so successful.”

According to him, there’s a relaxed atmosphere where team members can rely on each other and learn from one another. “Our team is a mix of younger colleagues who bring knowledge from their studies and more experienced colleagues. We all have great ideas, but sometimes we have to take a different approach because it simply works better that way.”

Life Outside the Office  

Outside of data science, Gerwin enjoys making music, working out, and snowboarding whenever he gets the chance. He’s always working on improving himself and learning new things. “I’m the kind of person who always sets new goals. Once I reach one, the next is already lined up,” he says. “Like my parents always said: just take it one step further.”

“I also recently started a Spanish course. During my trip through South America, I spoke almost nothing but Spanish, and I thought if I keep it up now, I’ll be fluent in a few years,” he adds.

What makes you proud?  

Gerwin is especially proud of his recent trip through South America. “I traveled solo for a while, and it went really well. I realized I could totally handle it.” He’s also proud of things that are more abstract, but just as important. “I’m mostly proud that I have my life together. I think I’m pretty steady for someone my age,” he says.

And something you might not expect: he can do a standing backflip. “If you ask, I’ll do it,” Gerwin says jokingly. “But please don’t ask me at the office!”
